Missing Previews on Netpublish Sites

Description

When I try to look at a preview on my Netpublish site, I get an image that says ‘Missing Preview’.

Solution

There are a number of things that can cause Netpublish Server to display a ‘Missing Preview’ message instead of showing a JPEG preview of the actual image. Usually it means that either Portfolio Server is not creating previews, or there’s a network port that is blocked.

Check Portfolio Server

Portfolio Server streams previews to Netpublish Server, but only if it’s able to create them:

  • Log into Portfolio Server administration (port 8091)
  • Click on ‘Catalogs’ in the left column
  • Select the catalog that is linked to the Netpublish site you’re troubleshooting
  • Click on the ‘Previews’ tab on the right side
  • Verify that ‘Create Previews’ is enabled. Turn that option on if it’s disabled.
  • Verify that there’s a valid path under “Save previews and clips in this folder:”. If not, go ahead and type one in.
  • Browse to that folder on your server and see if any JPG files are being created. There should be a whole series of subfolders, starting with ‘OO’ at the top level, with a number of folders underneath that contain JPG images whose numbers start with ’0000′.
  • Verify that previews are being created in the above folder structure.

TCP Port blocked?

Make sure that TCP port 2903 is open between Portfolio Server and Netpublish Server if they are on separate machines. This port has to be open so that Portfolio Server can stream the previews to your Netpublish site.
