Description

How do I set up the Universal Type Server Core Client?

Solution

The following instructions will guide you through installing and configuring the UTS Core Client.

Add the Core Client License to UTS

  1. Log into UTS Administration (usually on port 18081)
  2. Click on ‘Licenses’ in the left column
  3. Enter the Core Client license into the ‘Add Serial Number’ field and click on the “Add Serial Number” button.

Install Core Client

Note: You can only have the Universal Type Client or the Core Client installed on the same computer. Do not attempt to install both.

  1. Download the UTS Core Client installer from http://www.extensis.com/support/
  2. Run the installer and let it guide you through the installation steps

Create a Configuration File

Since the UTS Core Client has no user interface, you need to create a configuration file to point it to your Univeral Type Server. The steps below show you how to create a configuration file. After you’ve created one, you can copy it to the expected locations on other computers.

Mac

Here’s how to set up a configuration file using TextEdit:

  1. Launch Textedit from MacHD/Applications
  2. Choose Format > Make Plain Text. (If the menu reads “Make Rich Text”, then the file is already in plain text format.)
  3. Type in your UTS address and port number in the following manner:
    • server.address=10.99.22.14
    • server.port=8080
  4. Select File > Save
  5. Name the text file com.extensis.TypeServerCoreClient.conf
  6. Choose Plain Text Encoding > Unicode (UTF-8)
  7. Click the “Save” button to save the configuration file, and save it to: MacHD/Library/Preferences/com.extensis.TypeServerCoreClient.conf

Note: Make sure that you replace the IP address and port number in the example with those of your UTS.

Windows

Here’s how to set up a configuration file using Notepad:

  1. Launch Notepad from your Start menu, under Accessories
  2. Type in your UTS address and port number in the following manner:
    • server.address=10.99.22.14
    • server.port=8080
  3. Select File > Save
  4. Name the text file com.extensis.TypeServerCoreClient.conf
  5. Choose Encoding > ANSI
  6. Click the “Save” button to save the configuration file, and save it to the same directory that the Core Client is installed in:
    • Windows 32 Bit: C:\Program Files\Extensis\Type Server Core Client
    • Windows 64 Bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Extensis\Type Server Core Client

Note: Make sure that you replace the IP address and port number in the example with those of your UTS.

Create Startup Sets for Core Client users

Log into regular UTC and create a Startup Set in all workgroup(s) that the Core Client will subscribe to. The UTS Core Client does not have a user interface, so this needs to be done with the Universal Type Client.

  1. Launch Universal Type Client on a computer that has it installed.
  2. Connect to UTS with an account that is able to create Shared and Startup Sets
  3. Create a new set, or use an existing one in a workgroup that the Core Client will connect to
  4. Select the set, then go to File > Share Set
  5. Select the set again. This time go to File > Startup Set
  6. Repeat as needed for additional sets

Launch the UTS Core Client

Note: Unless your UTS is set up for Single-Sign-On, you will see a login dialog.

  1. Launch the Core Client from:
    • Mac: MacHD/Application/Type Server Core Client.app
    • Windows 32 Bit: C:\Program Files\Extensis\Type Server Core Client\Type Server Core Client
    • Windows 64 Bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Extensis\Type Server Core Client\Type Server Core Client
  2. Enter a Username and Password (unless using Single-Sign-On/Kerberos)
  3. Click on the ‘Login’ button.

The Core Client will download fonts and sets from UTS. Please keep in mind that there is no user interface for the UTS Core Client.
