Description

When I select files that I want to upload with the Portfolio Web Client and click Open, I get a dialog with the message “The following files were excluded from this upload because their file type or filename is not allowed.”

Solution

There are several reasons this might happen:

  • Filename Exclusions
  • File Type Exclusions

By default, Portfolio catalogs all file types, but will skip some files based on their name. A catalog Administrator can customize both settings to prevent other files from being added.
If a web client user tries to upload a file with a file type or filename that has been excluded, the web client displays the warning mentioned above.

Here’s how you can check what exclusions have been set up for a catalog. These steps must be done with a Portfolio user account that has Catalog Administrator access to the catalog.

Filename Exclusions

  1. Open Portfolio Desktop Client
  2. Select File > Connect to Server
  3. Select the catalog and click Open Catalog
  4. Enter the username and password and click OK
  5. Go to Catalog > Advanced Options
  6. Select the Exclude Filenames tab

The entries in this dialog lists filenames or text patterns that prevents corresponding files from being added to the catalog.

Review the list of entries to determine if the files you are trying to upload matches one or more item in the list. If a filename matches, either rename the file or delete the appropriate entry.

File Type Exclusions

  1. Open Portfolio Desktop Client
  2. Select File > Connect to Server
  3. Select the catalog and click Open Catalog
  4. Enter the username and password and click OK
  5. Go to Catalog > Advanced Options
  6. Select the File Types tab

By default, Catalog All File Types is enabled, which will allow all Portfolio to add all file types to the catalog. If Catalog Only the Following Types is selected, then then review the list of checked file types. If the file type you are trying to upload is listed, but unchecked, click the checkbox next to the file to enable it. If the file type is not listed, here’s how to add it to the list:

  • Click Add
  • Enter the desired file extension (without a period) in the Extension field: for example, you would enter TIFF for TIFF files.
  • Add the Mac File Type if needed
  • Enter a description for the file type in the Description field.
  • Click OK.
